At 5ft 2, i would definitely consider myself short.
In most situations, i seem to be surrounded by people who are taller, no, much taller than myself.
When i discovered that surveys of the Great British public gathered in 2011 placed the average female at 5ft 3, a mere inch taller than me, it is safe to say i was shocked.
I often consider myself a logical person, and logic seems to dictate that if i am barely an inch shorter than the national average, i should not conduct my life with the belief that i am a natural-born short-ass. Surely?
Yet, here we are. I feel short. To me, that is all that matters.
I have started to notice that when even the most intelligent people are confronted with any discussion of size or measurement, all logic seems to evaporate from the room in a cloud of advertisement-orientated smoke.
I weigh nine stone, a whole two stone lighter than the UK "average". Yet, when i am placed in a bikini or revealing piece of cloth, i occasionally feel a little overweight. Perhaps my thighs are a little wobbly? Or my stomach? My neck? My arms?
Every time these thoughts enter my head i feel ridiculous. I say to myself, i am a solid size ten...i am NOT fat.
My observation is this. Why is it that in such an informed world, where we can find out anything in a blink of an eye, are people so misinformed about their own bodies?
Why is it that even a young girl at a size eight can be called fat by her peers?
What exactly is going on here?!
So i have decided to fashion myself a new mind set and actively stop myself comparing my body to those of over-protein conscience gym-bunnies. I will not be ashamed of my natural petite shape.
I encourage y'all to do the same.
I am not fat. I am not short. I am not to be ashamed.
I will wear my clothes. I will stand up tall. I will not let bullshit reign.
I will strut my stuff. I will tan my skin. I will smile beneath the sun.
I will nod my head. Ignore the rest. My confidence has begun.
